Leadership Training for NHS Advisors AND NHS Officers

NHS Advisor and three of their local NHS Officers are welcome to join the MPA at the University of New England, Portland Campus for a day of Leadership Training for both Advisors AND Students!!

9:00 a.m. ~ Keynote: The World of NHS:  Leadership, Service, Character, and Scholarship with Ann Postlewaite, NASSP

Advisors:  The Nuts & Bolts of NHS Advising (break off with Ann Postlewaite)

Students: The University of New England Admissions team and Student Leadership Board are going to work with the MPA to offer the following topics:

  • Hopes and Worries– highlights from the Princeton Review annual survey of prospective students and parents (10,000+ respondents) as to their college search observations: (1.) How many colleges should students apply to?  (2.) What is the most important part of the application?  (3.) Financial aid – how important is it?  (4) How far from home?  (5) What is the importance of starting the college search process early?

We will also discuss:

– How to create a list of colleges

– What do colleges look for? (NACAC data)

– Recommendations (advice / best practice)

– Extracurriculars

– Early Action vs. Early Decision

– Optional testing policies – test-optional vs. test-blind

– Essays – best practices (includes blooper examples)

– Financial Aid Basics

– Respective roles of the parent and student in the search / application process

– The Significance of Student Voice at the College/University Level

About the Workshop . . .

Keynote:   The World of NHS: Leadership, Service, Character, and Scholarship.  What does it mean?  Here Ann will talk on each of the pillars, what it means in school and community, service to/for others – checking for need, best ways to plan, character and integrity, and scholarship.  Ann will also share information about chapters around the globe and in the United States.


About the Presenter . . .

Ann Postlewaite has been involved in student leadership for many years at the local, state, and national levels.   She served as an NHS adviser on and off for six years and student council adviser for 23 years.  Student Leadership and adviser development are two of her passions.   Ann currently is the Director of Community working with the various NASSP Online Networks for principals and student leaders.
