About the Webinar:
At this moment in time, it is critically important that we strive to develop ourselves, not just as educators, but as human beings. Based on Jennifer Abrams’ new book, Stretching Your Learning Edges: Growing (Up) at Work, participants will explore five facets for development based on a foundation of adult development theory. Offering practical strategies and tools, this four-session virtual seminar responds to the question: What can we do to be bigger and better versions of ourselves as collaborative team members and as leaders? This high engagement experience will include ways to identify your own learning edges using guiding questions, developmental continuums, self-assessments, and exercises for each of the five facets. Ample time will be provided for setting goals, creating growth plans, implementing new learning, and considering next steps for yourself and your team/school.
Participants will learn to: 1) understand themselves and others through the lens of identity; 2) suspend certainty and think with greater complexity and openness; 3) take increased responsibility for their language and communications; 4) engage with reciprocity and live ‘out loud’ the belief of mutual respect for all; and 5) build resiliency and work on emotional health. Join us and be part of a community of learners who embrace the importance of stretching your learning edges.
Session 1: Intro to the 5 Facets and Adult Developmental Theory–In this session Jennifer will share what drew her to write a book around the premise that we all need to be more developed selves at school, dig into a bit of adult developmental theory and introduce the facets in her text as well as the course outline. There will be time for self-assessments and discussions around the 5 facets.
Session 2: Facets 1 and 2 – Know Your Identity and Suspend Certainty–We will dig into the first two of 5 facets, Know Your Identity and Suspend Certainty. There will be discussion around questions such as: Which parts of my identity have the strongest effect on my work? What do I know about how I see the world differently than others? How do I work effectively with those differences? And what does it mean to stop and listen and not become defensive? How does one benefit from being more curious and inquisitive? Discussion and time for self-reflection will both be a part of the session. We will start to put together our personal stretch edges action plan.
Session 3 – Taking Responsibility and Engaging in Reciprocity–We move forward into Facet 3, Taking Responsibility and Facet 4, Engaging in Reciprocity. Discussions will take place around questions such as: How am I taking responsibility for my language? For example, how do I express a concern before it becomes a complaint? And how do I ask for clarity in purposeful and focused ways? Our overview of engaging in reciprocity will include asking ourselves how we can be a value add to the groups we join and how to develop our skill set to do so as well as doing some partner readings.
Session 4 – The Last Facet, Building Resiliency and Learning Plans Moving Forward: We conclude with the final Facet 5, Building Resiliency. How do we create a ‘stress tolerance’ for the challenging times in which we live? We need to be psychologically healthy for ourselves and others. What can we do proactively, in the moment of stress, and following that will build up our bandwidth and be more resilient? We will leave with a plan for developing our learning ‘edges’ and next steps.
In all sessions. Jennifer will introduce key concepts to deepen understanding through self-assessments, discussions, reading, videos, continuum check and exercises – All to grow one’s understanding of the facet, build one’s skill set and stretch us at our edges.
