Maine’s Positive Story of the Day from Williams Elementary School in Oakland ~
3rd Grade Students at Williams Elementary Participate in the Winterkids Games
For the last two years Shari Kinney has had her 3rd grade students participate in the WinterKids program where students and families are encouraged to eat healthy, get outside for some physical activity, and just have some winter fun! This year’s theme was all about winter “Olympic” challenges. Students received “gifts” each of the four participating weeks to help them on their journey. The first week, students received pedometers where they tracked their steps each day to see who had the most steps for the day and then calculated how many total steps were taken by the class by the end of the week – wow, was it a lot! The next week students received collapsible water bottles to track their water intake each day. Each bottle held 18 ounces of water which meant that students should be drinking at least four of them a day! The third week was all about families. Students received pennants to decorate with their families to represent themselves just like our Olympic teams. The final week focused on going for the gold in some Olympic challenges. Students looked cool in their WinterKids sunglasses while testing their skills on the challenges prepared by Shari Kinney and winning GOLD! The class learned a lot these past four weeks about staying healthy, being positive, persevering, working together, all while having a whole lot of fun too.
