Maine’s Positive PRINCIPAL Story of the Day ~ Lori Smail, Winthrop Middle School
Lori Smail is currently the President of MPA and Principal of Winthrop Middle School. Lori has been a Principal for 20 years and taught for 15 years prior to entering into Administration. In 2013 she was Named Maine’s National Distinguished Principal.
Lori holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Maine, Certificates of Graduate Studies in Inclusion and Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New England and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Trinity College of Vermont in both Special Education and Elementary Education.
Lori has a broad base of knowledge and has had the opportunity to lead schools through many changes. A strength of hers as she leads schools, is communication and a goal of providing opportunities for the unification of staff and developing a common language based on what is best for students. She centers her work around the empowerment of students and staff to become true “Leaders of their own Learning,” As President of the MPA her goal is to share this passion for education with her colleagues around the state.
