Maine’s Principal of the Day ~ Ben Lothrop, Principal of Limestone Community School ~

October is Principals’ Month and in honor of Maine’s exceptional principals, the “MPA Positive Story of the Day” will  feature a Maine Principal every day.  Today we are honoring Ben Lothrop, Principal of Limestone Community School.

Ben Lothrop is in his second year as a member of the MPA Board of Directors.  Ben is the Principal of Limestone Community School, a PreK-8 school, and has been a school principal for 16 years.  He has also been a school administrator at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln and Van Buren District School.  He was a high school social studies teacher at Ashland Community High School and Limestone High School.
Ben has been a varsity basketball and baseball coach, and is currently a basketball referee for IAABO 150 in Aroostook County.  He has served on various committees for the MPA, including the B, C, D Basketball Committee.
“I enjoy problem solving the day-to-day challenges of being a school principal, and hiring the right people to meet the needs of our students,” he said.  “I try to allow the staff to be innovative, which has led to the creation of our Outdoor Science Program and All-Day PreK program at LCS.  There’s nothing more exciting than watching a group of 8th graders canoe down a river for the first time!”
In his spare time, Ben loves being at his camp with his labs, hunting, snowmobiling, cheering for the Red Sox, or traveling with his wife, Julie.  He has also played drums for “Too Far North” for many years.
Ben has four daughters and 5 grandchildren!
