Maine’s Principal of the Day ~ Shelly Moody, Principal of Atwood Primary in Oakland ~
October is Principals’ Month and in honor of Maine’s exceptional principals, the “MPA Positive Story of the Day” will feature a Maine Principal every day. Today we are honoring Shelly Moody, Principal of Atwood Primary in Oakland.
Shelly Moody is a first year principal at Atwood Primary School, the school where her three children began their educational journey. She has spent each of her 26 years in education in RSU18, most of that time as a classroom teacher in grades 3-5. Shelly was privileged to spend 8 years as an instructional coach supporting students and staff in grades Pre-K through 8. Last year she stepped into an administrative role as the Dean of Students in Belgrade. In 2011, Shelly was honored to be recognized as Maine’s Teacher of the Year. She is also a member of the Maine State Literacy Team.
“Ralph Atwood once said, ‘Insist your school is a happy place.’ My role as the principal of the Atwood Primary School is guided by his mission. I feel tremendously fortunate to work with a student-centered staff of caring, dedicated educators who ensure that our students are seen, safe, supported, and celebrated every day. My heart is full when I am learning alongside students or observing the magic happening in our classrooms, so the best part of my day is when I am moving through our schoolhouse with my rolling desk! Daily interactions with students from greeting them in the morning outside our schoolhouse to calling parents with positive news brings joy to my day. It’s an honor to serve our community and the families at the Atwood Primary School as principal.” ~ Shelly Moody
